Black Squirrel

copyright Barbara Di Lella Black Squirrel 2015
Over the weekend the little black squirrel was completed. Black squirrels are quite common in Toronto but they are grouped with the Eastern Grey Squirrel species. Their black fur is the result of "adaptive melanism" which occurs in some wild animals that develop high levels of melanin resulting in better camouflage.

  1. He's very endearing, Linda. That slight tilt of the head is perfect. I don't have these black squirrels where I live, but I've seen the on the west island of Montreal. They're really striking against a yellow/gold background of autumn leaves.
